Effective Rate on Your Electricity Bill: What You Really Pay per kWh in Texas

Your effective rate is what you really pay for each kWh once everything on the bill is counted. It is the number that tells you whether a plan is working for you, and it is often different from the price you saw when you signed up.
For a line-by-line walk through the bill itself, read how to read your electricity bill in Texas on GridWise Audit. This article picks up from there and focuses on one number: what you actually pay per kWh.
Advertised Price vs. Effective Rate
Texas plans advertise prices at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh. Those prices are averages for a home that uses exactly that much in a month. Your home does not use the same amount every month, so the price you pay moves around.
Several things on a bill push your effective rate up or down:
- Delivery charges. Your utility (the TDU) charges for delivering power. Some plans fold this into the energy price and some list it separately.
- Monthly base charges. A fixed fee costs more per kWh in a low-use month than in a high-use month.
- Bill credits. A credit that applies only above a usage threshold can make a plan look cheap at 1,000 kWh and expensive at 900 kWh.
- Time of use. On a time-of-use plan, the share of power you use in each price window decides your rate.
Why One Bill Is Not Enough
A single bill shows your effective rate for one month. A mild spring month and a hot August month can produce very different numbers on the same plan. To judge a plan fairly, you need to see what it costs across a full year of your usage, not one snapshot.
What the Free Audit Shows
Just snap a photo of your bill. WattTrim fills in your rate for you. Give it a quick look, then approve the Smart Meter Texas email with one click. That's it. The audit then uses up to 12 months of your usage.
With that, the audit:
- Shows your current rate both as an energy-only price and with delivery charges included, so you are comparing like with like.
- Prices each available plan in your area at your actual monthly usage, including delivery, base charges and bill credits month by month.
- Shows an estimated monthly cost and annual savings for each plan, compared with what you pay now.
- Works out what your current plan costs across a year of your usage, and calculates an effective rate for your current plan and every plan it compares, including delivery, fees and credits.
You do not need to work out any of this by hand. The audit does the math with your usage and the plan details on file.
Keeping an Eye on It Over Time
Your effective rate on any plan changes with the seasons and with your habits. WattTrim Sentinel is an optional subscription ($4.99/mo or $44.99/yr) that pulls fresh Smart Meter data every week and keeps comparing plans against your current usage. It also sends contract renewal reminders. These are subscription features, not part of the free audit.
