Free Nights Plan Payoff: Will It Save You Money on Your Own Usage?

A free nights plan sounds simple: power is free for part of the night, so use more of it then. Whether it actually saves you money depends on one thing above all else, which is how much of your usage falls inside the free hours.
For the general pros and cons, read are free nights electricity plans worth it in Texas on GridWise Audit. This article picks up from there and focuses on your own numbers.
What Decides the Payoff
Free hours are only half of the plan. The other half is the price you pay the rest of the time, and on many of these plans that price is higher than a typical flat rate. Three things decide whether the trade works for you:
- Your night share. The percentage of your monthly usage that happens during the plan's free hours. The higher it is, the better the plan looks.
- The exact hours. Free windows differ from plan to plan. A window that starts at 9 PM catches more of an evening than one that starts at midnight.
- Delivery charges. Your utility still charges to deliver every kWh, including the ones used during free hours. Free energy is not the same as a free bill.
Summer matters most. Air conditioning runs hardest in the afternoon, which is exactly when the higher price applies.
Why Guessing Your Night Share Is Hard
Most people have no idea what share of their power they use at night. Your bill shows one total for the month. A household that runs the dishwasher, laundry and pool pump after dark may sit well above average, while a home with a work-from-home schedule and a hot west-facing living room may sit well below it. Two homes with the same monthly total can land on opposite sides of the line.
How the Free Audit Checks It
Just snap a photo of your bill and approve the Smart Meter Texas email with one click. There are no files to download or upload. The audit then uses up to 12 months of your 15-minute usage.
With that, the audit:
- Works out how your usage spreads across every hour of the week, month by month.
- Prices each time-of-use plan using the hours and prices from that plan's Electricity Facts Label, so free hours are priced at zero and other hours at the plan's own price, including seasonal prices where the label lists them.
- Adds delivery charges, base charges and any bill credits, then compares every plan against what you pay now, including flat-rate plans.
- When the top plan is a time-of-use plan, shows what share of your usage falls in its special hours and what share is billed at its regular price.
If we have not been able to confirm a plan's hours from its fact label, the audit still includes it, prices it from the provider's published average prices, and shows a note to confirm the terms with the provider before enrolling.
If you are already on a time-of-use plan, add your day and night prices when you review your bill details so your current cost is right.
When Free Nights Tend to Lose
A free nights plan usually struggles when most of your usage happens in the afternoon and early evening, when summer cooling is your biggest load, or when a cheaper flat-rate plan is available in your area. The audit does not assume any of this. It prices the plan on your real hours and lets the result speak.
Watching It Over Time
Your night share can change when your schedule changes. WattTrim Sentinel is an optional subscription ($4.99/mo or $44.99/yr) that pulls fresh Smart Meter data every week, rechecks plans against your latest usage every day, and emails you, at most once a month, if a better plan turns up. These are subscription features, not part of the free audit.
