Usage Tier and Bill Credit Check: Which Months Cost You More in Texas

Many Texas plans change price depending on how much you use in a month. A bill credit kicks in once you pass a kWh level. A minimum usage fee applies when you stay under one. Some plans charge a different energy price above a certain amount. The plan looks cheap at the usage level it was designed for, and much less cheap in the months you miss it.

For the basics of how these structures work, read why tiered electricity pricing is tricky on GridWise Audit. This article focuses on how your own months line up against them.

Your Year Is Not One Number

Advertised prices are shown at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh. Your home almost never uses exactly one of those amounts, and it certainly does not use the same amount every month. Many Texas homes use far more in August than in April.

That swing is what matters. A credit that needs 1,000 kWh may land in your summer months and disappear in spring and fall. A minimum usage fee may only show up in your mildest months. Averaging your year into one number hides both.

The Three Things to Check

  • Bill credits. Which of your months reach the kWh level, and which fall just short.
  • Minimum usage fees. Which months fall below the threshold and pick up the extra charge.
  • Usage tiers. Whether your high-use months push part of your usage into a higher price.

How the Free Audit Checks It

Just snap a photo of your bill and approve the Smart Meter Texas email with one click. There are no files to download or upload. The audit then uses up to 12 months of your usage.

With that, the audit:

  • Prices every plan one month at a time at the kWh you actually used that month.
  • Applies each plan's bill credits only in the months your usage qualifies, using the credit terms stored from the plan's Electricity Facts Label. Seasonal credits count only in the months they cover.
  • Adds a plan's minimum usage fee in the months you fall below its threshold.
  • Prices plans with usage tiers at each tier's own price when the tiers are on file.
  • Counts a bill credit on your current plan only in the months you reach its level. If your bill shows the credit, the photo fills it in for you.
  • Shows your monthly usage and estimated cost on the top plan, and an effective rate for every plan it compares.

If a plan's credit terms could not be confirmed, the audit still includes it, uses the pricing the provider published, and shows a note to confirm with the provider before enrolling.

What a Good Result Looks Like

A plan that wins on your usage is one that stays reasonable in your lowest month and your highest month, not just in an average one. Because the audit adds up the whole year month by month, a plan that only shines at exactly 1,000 kWh will not rise to the top unless your months really suit it.

Watching It Over Time

If your usage changes, so do the months where a credit lands. WattTrim Sentinel is an optional subscription ($4.99/mo or $44.99/yr) that pulls fresh Smart Meter data every week, rechecks plans against your latest usage every day, and emails you, at most once a month, if a better plan turns up. These are subscription features, not part of the free audit.
