How WattTrim's Audit Actually Works - And Why It Finds Plans Other Tools Miss

WattTrim - Take a photo of your bill, we handle the rest

WattTrim compares electricity plans by pulling your actual 15-minute interval usage data from Smart Meter Texas and running it against every plan in GridWise's database of 1,500+ Texas electricity plans. Instead of ranking plans off a single monthly usage guess, WattTrim calculates what you would have actually paid on each plan, based on when and how much power you really use.

How other comparison sites calculate

Most electricity comparison sites work the same way. They ask you to estimate your monthly usage or pick a tier, usually 500, 1000, or 2000 kWh. That single number gets plugged into each plan's advertised rate, and the site ranks the results. There is no deeper analysis of when you use power, how your usage shifts across seasons, or whether a plan's pricing structure actually fits your consumption pattern. The comparison is only as granular as the single number you type in.

Even the sites that claim to use your Smart Meter data are still only comparing it against their own curated list of sponsored plans, not the full market. The plans in their rankings are there because providers pay to be listed. So even when the usage data is real, the comparison is still limited to a subset of plans selected by advertising dollars rather than fit.

That approach breaks down fast. A flat monthly estimate cannot catch time-of-use pricing traps, where a plan looks cheap on paper but charges a premium during the hours you actually use power. It cannot account for seasonal usage swings, so a plan that looks great based on your mild-spring bill might cost you far more in August. It misses usage-tier breakpoints, where crossing a threshold like 1,000 kWh changes your entire rate structure. And it ignores bill credit thresholds, where missing a usage target by a few kWh means losing a credit worth real money.

Here is the practical problem: a customer who uses 1,100 kWh a month and a customer who uses 900 kWh a month get shown the exact same ranked list on most comparison sites, even though their best plan could be completely different. Sites like SaveOnEnergy, EnergyBot, ChooseTex, and Gatby Energy all rely on this same flat-estimate model. It is fast and it is easy to build, but it is not built to reflect how you actually use electricity.

How WattTrim calculates differently

WattTrim starts from a different data source entirely. Instead of asking you to guess your usage, WattTrim pulls your actual 15-minute interval data directly from Smart Meter Texas, which is 96 readings per day. That granularity reveals your real consumption pattern: when you use power during the day, how much you use during peak hours versus off-peak hours, and how your usage shifts across seasons.

With that real usage profile in hand, WattTrim runs it against every available plan and calculates what you would have actually paid on each one. Time-of-use plans, bill credit plans, and tiered pricing plans are all evaluated against your real data, not a flat estimate. If a plan's bill credit only kicks in above 1,000 kWh, WattTrim can tell you exactly how many months you would have hit it and how many you would have missed, because it is looking at your actual monthly totals, not a guess.

Getting started is simple. Take a photo of your electricity bill, and WattTrim's AI extracts your account details. From there, the Smart Meter Texas API pulls your interval data automatically. There is no CSV to upload and no manual data entry. Results are ready within minutes, not days.

GridWise as the data backbone

None of this works without a plan database deep enough to make the comparison meaningful, which is where GridWise comes in. GridWise maintains the largest independent electricity plan database in Texas, with more than 1,500 plans across all six TDU service areas: Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Central, AEP North, TNMP, and LP&L.

That database includes the publicly advertised plans you would find on PowerToChoose.org, plus exclusive broker-negotiated rates that do not appear on public comparison sites. GridWise ingests and updates plan data multiple times per week from multiple sources, so the comparison is working against current market conditions, not a stale snapshot.

Without a database this comprehensive, WattTrim would be limited to comparing your usage against a subset of plans, the same constraint that limits most other tools. GridWise is the data backbone that makes WattTrim's recommendations possible: your real usage matched against every available option, not just a handful of sponsored results.

Sentinel monitoring and the GridWise portal

An audit is a snapshot in time, but usage and rates both change. That is what Sentinel Continuous Monitoring, included with your subscription for $4.99/mo, is built for. Sentinel keeps working after your initial audit is complete.

Each week, Sentinel pulls your latest Smart Meter data to track how your usage pattern is evolving. Each day, it checks your latest usage against the full GridWise plan database. If a better plan surfaces, or if your own usage pattern shifts enough to change which plan fits best, you get alerted.

All of this feeds into the GridWise portal, a dashboard that shows your usage insights, bill tracking, export credits for solar customers, and personalized recommendations. Every recommendation in the portal is built from your actual weekly Smart Meter data, not estimates.

Independence

WattTrim's plan rankings are based solely on your actual usage data. Provider compensation never influences your results. WattTrim earns revenue through optional subscription services like Sentinel and through enrollment commissions when you choose to switch through the platform, but the ranking you see is never adjusted based on which provider pays more.
